All 6 performers are performing and improvising within flexible structures composed by Michael Maiorana.

Each musician performed from their own home or office spread across Minnesota, connected over Zoom and Cleanfeed, and streamed live directly to YouTube. Performing music like this is like singing happy birthday on a video call, everyone’s just a little delayed from everyone else, but the music is written specifically with that in mind. All of the music includes some combination of flexible notation and improvisation to help bridge the temporal gap between performers, and was developed collaboratively with the performers. With the direct livestream to YouTube, the audience hears exactly what the musicians are hearing and responding to, making everything feel as close and immediate as friends on a video call.

Michael Maiorana is a fiscal year 2022 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
